I have been watching The Chi for a while and have put this show on my previous watch list. I love the warmth that this show showcases! Lena Waithe, a Chicago native, does a great job of showcasing authentic family situations and togetherness, confident transgender relationship depiction with also conflicts that may arise within transgender relationships, the effects of experiencing homophobia from others, and inevitable crime entanglements within the black community. I ultimately enjoy the fact that this show is not drug-heavy. Many black and brown television shows often revolve heavily around drug trafficking within their crime shows. Although it may be interesting to watch at times, it becomes redundant and usually inevitably promotes drug exploitation and substance abuse.
I like how Jake is at the forefront of Season 5's display photo. He is the face of this season because of how much he has shown his maturity. As a viewer, I am very proud of how he handled specific outcomes in life and even took the initiative to step up to his forthcoming responsibilities. Also, I love seeing Kevin on the show because he reminds me so much of my youngest brother! Overall, Lena Waithe does a phenomenal job building character development and providing consistent depth season after season without becoming redundant.
I recently came across this show called Flatbush Misdemeanors, which is on Showtime. It has exceeded my expectations. This show displays authentic New York life, the pursuit of working towards one's passions, acknowledging drug abuse, and suffering the consequences of one's actions. Nonetheless, this show is hilarious and can communicate those lessons light-heartedly. The comedy style is full of sarcasm and dry comedy. While writing this, I discovered that the two main characters shown in the picture above are the creators of this show. How cool! Their names are Kevin Iso and Dan Perlman, both comedians. A message that stuck out to me the most in this show is when Kevin's sister acknowledged that "he has the talent, but is lazy." That statement is an eye-opener because many people are blessed with gifts that can shape the world. Still, their laziness is why they fall short of being in a limitless loophole. Overall, I love this show and cannot wait for it to return.
FUn facts:
The cast member who plays Drew, Hassan Johnson, is the face of this meme, which originated from the classic television show The Wire.
I looked up Kristin Dodson on Google to see if she had played on other projects and where she might be from, and I was baffled to find out she was 32 years old! OMG! That is the beauty of acting and black-aging (black don't crack) because Kristin Dodson looks so young and fits her role well.
I love this spinoff of All American! All American: Homecoming is better than the original series to me. The interactions that the cast members have with one another are more organic. The original All-American casts interacted in ways older adults would expect growing adolescents to act, in other words, very mature for their age. And each interaction felt like a lesson. That approach may have stemmed from the cast still being in high school and living in their parent's house. (Both shows had different writers. April Blair wrote All American, while Nkechi Okoro Carroll wrote the homecoming spinoff.) I appreciated those healthy displays of lesson-filled interactions. Still, it was also enjoyable to watch the actors from the Homecoming edition act at their expected age and see them evolve independently. I loved Simone in this show and was glad they highlighted her journey. Simone and Damon share great chemistry off the rip. Thea confused me about how she responded to specific situations. She acts like a little girl. Jesse always had the stupidest look on his face, lol. This show is a 9.5/10, and I wish I had not watched it so fast.
Sweet Life: Los Angeles is now on their 2nd season! I love this show. This unscripted show showcases young black entrepreneurs thriving in their careers and embarking on new endeavors, making it so refreshing to watch. Of course, whenever there is a group of friends with different personalities, we will witness highlights of fun times and heated moments. I love how this group seemed self-aware of their emotions and can be mature enough to accept when they were wrong in MOST situations.
Simply put, this group is all about their bag! So far, the scene that stuck out to me was when Tylynn Burns said, "If you are my friend, why not tell me I am doing something wrong rather than talk about it amongst each other ." I related to this statement because I once felt like a real friend should tell you when you fall short in every situation. However, I have learned that it should not always be necessary for someone else to tell you your faults. It may come across as unsolicited advice; most of the time, one's friend(s) may accept that this is the person's nature.
Conversely, harboring and discussing your friends' faults with others is unacceptable.
Also, I love how Jerrold Smith has taken the "It has nothing to do with me" phrase and ran with it! Because same, lol. I have been feeling like that, too, lately.
Another notable moment thus far in the season was how Amanda Scott defused the tension between her best friend, Tylynn Burns, and her boyfriend, Rob Lee, appropriately. It can be very awkward when two of your favorite people are in a tense predicament, and you are in the middle. After stepping back to understand both perspectives, Amanda defused the tension without leaving one party hanging, which most people tend to do in uncomfortable situations like this. So, huge kudos to her!
This season is only four episodes in, and I cannot wait for more episodes!
